Scripture: “To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.” ” Genesis 3:16
Reflection: It’s easy to focus on one phrase: “In pain you shall bring forth children.” But this verse is about more than contractions and childbirth. It’s a picture of what sin did to God’s perfect creation. Before sin entered the world, there was no pain, sorrow, or fear. Adam and Eve walked in perfect fellowship. But one act of disobedience changed everything. The effects of sin reached every part of life- including work, relationships, and even childbirth.
The Hebrew word translated “pain” also carries the idea of sorrow, hardship, and toil. Motherhood would still be a blessing, but it would now come with sacrifice and struggle. Intensified pains. Every labor pain would serve as a reminder that the world was no longer as God originally created it. Yet, even in the middle of judgement, God was already revealing His mercy.
Just one verse earlier when God was speaking to the serpent (Genesis 3:15), God promised that the offspring of the woman would one day crush the serpents head. Later on, through the very woman who would experience pain in childbirth would come the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. What began with pain would ultimately lead to redemption. Isn’t that amazing? God doesn’t always remove our pain while we are in it, but He brings His greatest purposes through it.
Today, we still experience the effects of the fall. We labor, we grieve, we struggle, and we wait. But because of Jesus Christ, our pain is never without purpose. Every hardship reminds us that this world is not our final home, and every promise of God points us toward the day when He will wipe away every tear.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that even when sin brought pain into the world, You already had a plan for redemption. Help me to trust You when life is difficult and to remember that you can bring hope out of heartache. Teach me to keep my eyes on Your promises until the day You make all things new.
